Today's the day!

Hubby and I are closing on our house this morning!! We're so excited!

As soon as the closing is done, it's down to work for us. We'll be working down here:

That's right. I'll be spending my Labor Day weekend actually "laboring" while removing all the moldy and water damaged stuff in the basement and then sealing it all to be resistant to water. Oh, and I also get to clean a 7200 square foot house. I even ordered us the tyvek suits and masks. Should make for great pictures.

Hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Eat a hamburger for me will you? I'm sure the closest we'll get is take out from McDonald's so we can get as much work done as possible.

Snickers Cupcakes

(I forgot to take a photo, but they looked very similar to this)

Last Wednesday was not my night for making cupcakes.

Sure, they smelled lovely and looked wonderful when I took them out of the oven. They didn't look or smell so wonderful when I came back in 40 minutes or so later from working out in the office.

I walked in to the worst burnt smell ever!

You see, I had pulled the cupcake holders out of the oven and quickly set them on top of the stove so I could get back to work. The whole time I'm thinking to myself that I really should pull out the cooling racks, but then I figured "nah, this will work and it will save me time."

Well, turns out I forgot to turn the back burner off of "low" when dinner was done and thus my one tray of cupcakes was still cooking from the bottoms up.

Let's just say they were a little more than "crispy" on the bottom. My hubby suggested I just make the muffin tops, but there wasn't too much of those I could salvage. Plus, they just smelled burned.

Thankfully, I was able to find enough good ones that I could frost and take to work.

Just when I thought the problem was solved, I pulled out my new easy decorator to do the frosting with. Someone told me that she put a whole can of frosting in there and was able to decorate 24 cupcakes no problem. Worth a shot seeing how I only had 16 or so that survived the toasting. Well, after cupcake #5 I ran out of frosting. I don't know if I used the wrong tip or what, but those 5 cupcakes had more frosting on them than I've ever seen!

So, I had to scrape it off and hand frost the remaining cupcakes. I ended up spending more time than I saved...aagghh!!

Oh well, when they were all frosted and the chopped snickers were placed on top, I helped myself to one and suddenly felt a lot better.

Chocolate. Does a girl good.

Hello, my name is Brie, and I...

fed my husband meals from a box not once, but twice this week.

I know. I'm a bad wife.

But hey, at least he got fed, right?

Don't worry, I'll make up for it tomorrow when I make enchiladas.

Almost back

I know it's been awhile since I have posted. We were on vacation for a week (an update on that later) and then when I got back to work this past Monday, I was without a computer up until late last night, so I haven't had an opportunity to post.

I promise to try to get back in the swing of things come next Monday with pictures from vacation, more cupcakes from work, and news on the house.

On Vacation...Almost

Well, the in-laws went down today to secure a beach house. I'm sure it's not going to be as spiffy as what we got accustomed to these past few years, but at least we're going! Thanks to those of you who were praying.

I don't think I'm going to have any chance to blog while I'm away, but hopefully I'll have some great photos to post when I return.

Color Choices

Like my new blog background? I'm in the process of updating my blog and using this temporarily until I have some time to design something I like.

However, as I was looking for free backgrounds yesterday, I was struck by the fact that the colors I prefer for website and online stuff are very different from colors I would use to decorate my home.

I love the black, green and white scheme for my blog, but I don't think I would choose these colors to decorate my house. For that I prefer the rich colors of Tuscany with a nice stripe or paisley type pattern.

Anybody else notice you prefer a different set of colors for your online "home" as opposed to the colors you like to use in your real home?

A Bad Day

Yesterday has to go down as one of the worst days I've had in awhile. Nothing horrible happened like somebody dying or getting really sick or anything, just a lot of disappointments and stress.

First off, I tried calling my dr. to switch my appointment because we're going to be out of town working on the house. It's important that I see the same dr. every month and on the month for this medication I'm on, and I was told that the earliest appt she'd have available is more than a month after my original appt. This obviously is not going to work, and we already have our plane tickets booked to go work on the house, so my only hope is that somebody cancels the week of my current appt. A week sooner won't work because I won't be finished with the treatment plan, and a week later is too late because I have to have lab work and a pregnancy test done on the month. So, please be praying that somebody cancels an appt. between Augsut 25 & 27th!

I call my hubby to tell him this news and ask him to pray, only to find out that he had more "great" news to tell me. Next week we are all slated to go on vacation. By "we" I mean hubby, myself, his parents, his grandma, and a few other relatives (his sister, his cousin & his wife, and my brother) thrown in for a few days here and there. For the past 15 years or so, the family has been going to Ocean City, NJ and renting a house. About 4 years ago we realized that if you wait to book your house until the week before you go, you get much nicer houses for a cheaper price. The last three years, this worked like a charm. Two weeks ago when we checked houses there were plenty of options available, but their prices hadn't dropped yet. Well, when hubby went to book the house yesterday they were all gone. At least the ones that would work for his 89 year old grandma. We were all majorly bummed. We're trying everything we can to find one that may work, so please be praying that there will be a last minute cancellation in a house that is close enough to the shore, and on the first floor for his grandma's sake, so that we'll be able to continue the family tradition. We didn't get to go last year because of our wedding, so this year it means ever more to be able to go.

To top it all off, I got to spend my day yesterday trying to figure out how to get our company webpage to consistently be at the top of a google search for a wide variety of word searches. I do not enjoy trying to learn/read HTML code at all, so I had a huge headache the whole day.

Hubs had more stressful news when I got home and we were both ready to pack it in. Thankfully, we got a small reprive by dinner out at our favorite little Mexican joint with friends.

Before we went to bed, we reminded ourselves of the prayer that our pastor preached on this past Sunday. It's found in Proverbs 30:8-9, "...give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the LORD ?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God."

No matter how difficult of a day it was, it was not too difficult for our Lord to handle. He provided us with food to eat, clothes to wear, and a shelter over our heads. We took the time to list the blessings He has so richly bestowed on us and reminded ourselves that He does provide our daily bread.

Recipes from the Party

In case you're interested, here are the recipes from my hubby's birthday party.

CHICKEN WITH GRAPES AND COUSCOUS
Serves 4

2 T. extra virgin olive oil
1 T. chopped fresh thyme leaves
Coarse salt and pepper
2 T. butter, cut into pieces (I forgot the butter last night and it came out fine)
¼ c. flour
2 lbs. chicken tenders
½ c. white wine (last night I used left over champagne and it was good; could use chicken stock)
2 ½ c. chicken stock
1 c. heavy cream
¼ c. grainy, stone-ground mustard
1 ½ c. (about ½ lb.) seedless red grapes, halved
2 c. couscous

Heat a large skillet over medium to medium high heat. Add olive oil and butter to the pan. Place flour in a shallow dish. Season chicken with salt and pepper then dredge the tenders in flour and add to the pan. Cook chicken 7 to 8 minutes until browned. Add wine and scrape up browned bits as wine cooks down and bubbles, 30 seconds. Add ½ cup stock to skillet. Combine cream and mustard and add to pan. Add grapes to the pan and turn chicken and grapes to coat and combine with the sauce. Simmer 5 minutes over low heat.

Bring remaining 2 c. stock and thyme to a boil in a small pot. Add couscous. Put a tight fitting lid on pot and remove from heat. Let stand 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Serve tenders and grapes on couscous.

MANDARIN SALAD

¼ c. sliced almonds
1 T. plus 1 t sugar
¼ head lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces
¼ bunch romaine, torn into bite-size pieces
2 medium stalks celery, chopped (about 1 c.)
2 green onions (with tops), thinly sliced (about 2 T.)
1 can (11 oz.) mandarin oranges*

Sweet/Sour Dressing:
¼ c. vegetable oil
2 T. sugar
2 T. vinegar
1 T. snipped parsley
½ t. salt
dash of pepper
dash of red pepper sauce

Shake all ingredients for dressing in tightly covered jar; refrigerate.

Cook almonds and sugar over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is melted and almonds are coated. Cool and break apart. Store at room temp.

Place lettuce and romaine in bowl. Add celery and onions. Pour dressing over all. Add orange segments and mix well. Lightly stir in almonds.

**WARNING: This dessert is VERY rich so small portions will do you! The original recipe specifies butter and margarine, so it must make a difference. Next time I make it I'm going to try and figure out how to cut down on the sweetness of it.

BUSTER BAR DESSERT

1 15 oz. pkg. oreos
4 T. butter, melted
1 c. margarine
3 c. powder sugar
3 sq. semisweet chocolate (3 oz.)
4 eggs
½ gallon vanilla ice cream
1-1/4 c. Spanish peanuts

Crumble cookies until fine, reserving 1/3 c. for top of dessert. Mix crumbs with butter and put in 9 x 13 pan. Set aside. Cook together margarine, sugar, chocolate, and eggs until boiling. Let cool. Spread vanilla ice cream over crumbs in pan. Sprinkle peanuts over ice cream. Freeze until ice cream is firm. Pour cooked sauce over peanuts. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Store in freezer.

My Hubby's Birthday

This was a great weekend!

Saturday I was able to finally get our room clean and start working on getting my craft room organized. I'm not brave enough to post pictures of that yet, but hopefully soon. Here is one of our newly cleaned bedroom, though. I like this room because so far it's really the only space in the entire house that is decorated in my style. Which, given that it's my in-laws house, it's great that they let me do what I want with this room (minus picking the paint color).

Ahh...much better and so much more relaxing! I also cleaned the bathroom, worked on getting the in-laws computer cleaned up and running much faster, and worked out.

Sunday was my hubby's 31st birthday! We started the day off with church and then I ran to CVS to check out the deals. After that, it was home to wrap hubby's gift and start cooking. We celebrated with his parents and grandma. He loves ice cream cakes, so I made Buster Bar dessert on Saturday so it had time to freeze. For lunch I made his favorite meal of Chicken & Grapes with Cous Cous (I got the recipe from Rachel Ray) and my Mandarin Orange Salad. Grandma brought the fruit salad that he loves so much. Yum!

After lunch he opened gifts. His parents spent the whole day Saturday giving his office a complete cleaning top to bottom. This was a fantastic gift because I just don't have the time to do this. I ended up getting him the tool bag I talked about (which he actually liked!) and some interlocking exercise floor mats for our workout area. He loved them! I was so happy!

Next it was on to watch the Yankees in their exciting come from behind win. It would have been a great day to be at the ballpark, but I'm sure tickets would have been outrageously expensive because it was sold out. We then all decided to go and see "The Dark Knight." I LOVED it! It was the first Batman movie I've ever seen and it was awesome. I don't think my mother-in-law and Gram liked it too much, but it was fun. We wrapped the day up with pizza on the way home from dropping Grandma off.

The only bummer? I had to blur out the face of my husband of less than a year. I thought people only did that when they broke up.

For My Sister

My sister called me the other day to ask if I had any ideas for my nephew's 1st birthday party. He loves rubber ducks so they're going with that for a theme. She asked me if I would be able to make a replica of some invites that they found online. She needed the replica because the site wanted $50 for 20 invitations, and they were just digital photos. So, based on the idea they liked, I came up with this handmade version instead. I think if I had free reign (and more time) I would have done them different, but they turned out pretty cute. Wish I could join them for the party!

House Tour - Craft Room & 3rd Floor

**UPDATED 7/30 with the remaining photos**

Walking up a floor we come to three more rooms and a small storage room. There is one shared bathroom on this floor and it happens to be the only one in the house that has a shower so it will probably be our main bathroom until the others get fixed.

The room I'm most excited about on this floor is my craft room.

It's located directly above the master bedroom on the front side of the house. Through the door on the left is the shared bathroom.

The one and only shower in the house! That will definitely be getting changed. To the right of the shower (next to the sink) is another door that opens up into this bedroom:

And, back across the hall on the same side as the craft room, but in the back of the house, is the current laundry room. Hubs told me he's moving the laundry stuff down to the basement. I'm not too excited about this because that's a lot of hauling clothes up and down flights of stairs, but we'll see. I don't know what else to use this room for with the weird pole sticking in the middle of it.

So, that concludes the house tour. Stay tuned for photos once we start the updates. Right now we're in the process of finalizing the closing and hoping that all goes well. As of now, it's looking like it will be the end of August, but we'll see!

Shopping for my Husband...aagghh!

This weekend is my hubby's birthday.

For the past five years, I've taken him to a NY Yankees game for his birthday because he is a die hard fan. We're trying to get around to all the stadiums as the Yankees play the home team. So far, we've only made it to Camden Yards when they played the Baltimore Orioles. Last year we had tickets to see them play the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, but we were flying standby on my mom's flight benefits and the flight was oversold so we didn't make it. I was very bummed because last year was the big 3-0 (shh...don't tell him I told you!) and I wanted it to be special. All the more reason why I want this year to be something good.

Unfortunately, this year we don't have the time or money to get to an away game, and with it being the last year at Yankee Stadium, tickets are so hard to get, especially in the price range I'm willing to pay. Granted, I love my husband, but I also don't think that we should break the bank to celebrate one day. Especially, when we have a house that is in dire need of repair!

So, now I'm facing the dilemma of what to get him. He's very hard to shop for and if you ask him what he wants he only tells you a Books-a-Million gift card. That's fine if only one person was buying him a gift, but when my family asks what he wants and I tell everyone a Books-a-Million gift card, it seems like it will get kinda boring. Especially when he's given them the same list for the past few years and Christmas this year! He tells me he'll love it, but I don't know. Thankfully, he's also now added tools to his list. Books & tools. That's all. Oh, and underwear and undershirts, but I cross those off the list because he has drawers full. He's still living in his bachelor days of not doing laundry more than once a month!

What's a wife to do? The other day I was at Target and I noticed they now sell power tools and stuff. I figured since we'll be doing a lot of travelling to work on our house, we'll need to be bringing some tools with us each time we go instead of leaving them there. So, I got a carry on travel tool bag. Hopefully he likes it. Something tells me it will be getting returned for something different, but we'll see.

Still, though, I don't think a $15 bag comes close to being on the same level as Yankees tickets. So, after some more thought, I decided to sell a few things on Craig's List to make some money so that when we're on vacation with his family at the beach in a week or so we can rent jet skis for the day. Should be fun!

I'm also going to make him his favorite meal this weekend which is chicken and grapes with couscous and buster bar dessert. I'll try to post the recipes, accompanied by photos, next week.

My question for you is: do you have a husband/man in your life that is hard to shop for? What do you normally end up doing in these situations?

Hopefully next year I'll be able to go back to Yankees tickets for his birthday. But, I still have the dilemma of Christmas every year.

House Tour - Rest of 2nd Floor

Hubs and I were talking about the house again last night and it reminded me that I never finished posting the photos for the house tour, so without further ado...
In addition to the master suite on the 2nd floor, there is also two other bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, and a room that we're going to convert into a media room.

Also, I forgot to mention that none of the furniture in this house is ours. These photos were taken the second time we visited the house and the previous owners hadn't moved out yet, so it's their stuff in the photos. Thank goodness they took it all with them because our tastes are very different!

This is the bedroom that is located on the northwest corner of the house (looking at the house from the street it would be on the front right of the 2nd floor).

This is the bathroom that goes with that bedroom. The marble siding has got to go! I don't care if it's marble...it's ugly! Unfortunately, people must have been a lot smaller in 1909 because the tubs are tiny and there are no showers in the bathroooms. All that will definitely change. The bathroom for the room on the southwest side of the house looks exactly the same.

This is the room on the southwest side of the 2nd floor. Both of these bedrooms are great sizes for kids' rooms.

This is the room that used to be the servant quarters. My husband was quick to correct me when I referred to them as the "slave" quarters accidentally last night. I was quick to point out that while they may have been called "servants" I could almost guarantee him they were of African American decent! Especially given the city where this house is located, which hopefully I'll get to reveal soon.

Anyway, the wall that juts out in the left part of the photo is to a toilet and sink, but we're going to tear it out because there are three other bathrooms on this floor and if we can't hold it long enough to make it to one of those, we've got serious problems! Plus, that would give us more space in this room to make it into a genuine media/family room. The nice thing about this room is that it's right off the back staircase that runs right down to the kitchen so it's very convenient. My hubby would love to get some bleacher seats from Yankee Stadium when they tear it down the end of this year, but I think they're going to be a little to pricey for our budget. But, if any of you happen to come across a great deal on Yankee bleacher seats, let me know!

My New Do (or For My Mom)

This is mainly for my mom who has been patiently (or not) for pictures of my new hairstyle. I'll post some from the day I had it done (in the green shirt) and then some from my first day of styling it on my own (the teal shirt). Obviously I need to learn how to fix the bang properly, but hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon. I think I just need to make it flatter. If anybody has any suggestions...please send them my way!

This haircut is so easy. I love it! Well, for now anyway. I seem to have inherited my mom's genes of having to change our hair up every few months.

I never have understood those people who are so scared of getting their haircut and trying a new style. Or better yet those people who say they're going in for a new style and all they do is cut a inch or so off and it looks absolutely the same. I just want to shout, "Hair grows back! Try something new!"

House Tour - Master Bedroom & Spare Room

Today was our house inspection and hubs said that everything is about what we expected. There seems to be more water damage in the basement than there was last time we were there which led to some mold, but nothing we can't fix.

So, let the tour resume on the 2nd floor with the Master Bedroom & Spare Room!

The windows in the above photo face the front of the house. When you come up the main staircase, the master bedroom is on your right (on the left when looking at the house).

I love how there's a fireplace in here! To the right of the fireplace is the entrance to the bathroom. The marble on the walls has got to go! There's also no shower, just a small tub and a huge hole in the floor.

Thankfully, the wall with the toilet on it backs up to this:

So, we're going to knock out the wall and covert it in to one bigger bathroom.

The above photo is the current closet. It's really weird because you have to duck low and then through another room, etc. We're going to try and just open it up into a hallway. Walking through the current closet leads you to this room (which also has its own door off the hallway):

This is the part we're going to convert into the bedroom area because then we're facing the backyard, and not the street. We might also put a walk in closet in this part or in the room with the fireplace. This room is bigger than the photo looks. So, in essence, we're going to convert the whole right side of the house when you walk up the main staircase (or the left side when you're looking at the house from outside) on the 2nd floor to the Master Suite.

Let's Be Honest Here

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to postpone my house tour another day. Things are crazy today and I'm not going to get to it. My mom is also eagerly waiting for me to post a photo of my new hairstyle so hopefully I'll be able to get that done tomorrow too.

I love only working 4 days a week because it makes my days and week fly by, but I no longer have the free time I used to in order to post here during the day and my computer access at night is really limited, so we'll see.

Hopefully, though, the house tour will resume tomorrow!

I forgot...

to post on the house tour yesterday. I promise I'll try my best to make up for it later today. We're having printer and computer issues...what's new...and that's taking my time for now.

House Tour - Sitting Room, Office & Living Room

When you walk in the front door, the first room on your right is this lovely sitting room. I always wanted a yellow room, but I don't know if I want it this yellow. This room might have some damage in the front left corner, but besides that, I think it's pretty much cosmetic.

It will be a cozy place to read a book during the winter.

The second door on the right side of the main hallway is the study. Definitely planning on getting rid of the hideous green wall color! That door in the back right corner leads to a half bath.

The study also has it's own fireplace that backs up to the fireplace in the sitting room.

Aforementioned half bath.

The first door on the left side of the hallway is (I say door because each room off the main hall has these gorgeous pocket doors.) the "formal" living room. It will be an incredible place to put a tree at Christmas. We're already planning on having my side of the family there for Christmas in 2010. That gives us a goal to shoot towards. This room also has it's own fireplace. It connects to the dining room and the door to the left of the photo is in to a solarium (which you can see in the photos of the front of the house). Now, you can see that this house needs some work. Thankfully, the previous owners already fixed the plumbing in this hole so we just need to repair the plaster/dry wall.

Join me again on Monday as we move up to the 2nd Floor!

Time for Some Campaigning

It seems like it's always time for campaigning in our household! Thankfully I enjoy talking politics. Just wanted to share a link in case you haven't seen the most recent JibJab production. They always have funny spoofs they put out. I don't always agree with everything they state, but their little rhymes and view of thing is often entertaining.
